The educational workshop on the vegetable garden: life from seed to table
During the journey the children will carry out the sowing and harvesting in flower beds and greenhouses set up in the garden and / or at school. The students will be made to fill in a work diary, so that they can write down all their work and emotional experiences, document them with photographs and personalize them with drawings, notes, naturalistic samples, so that they return home after having lived an experience having a strong practical and cultural value.
Educational objectives of the laboratory
The project aims to introduce children to all stages of plant cultivation and life, through a direct work activity in the garden. Main topics and activities are: visit of the educational garden, manual work of the garden, sowing, irrigation and finally the collection of products.
Promote in the pupils a vision of nutrition, through the knowledge of foods and the relationships that exist between correct and seasonal, based on a correct human behavior towards the environment and health;
Know the typical products of the area and the importance of traditions and biodiversity;
Develop a conscious approach to consumption.
Activities
In this workshop, activities will be carried out that give an overview of the cultivation of the vegetable garden by dealing with the following topics:
How to grow: we know the vegetables;
Aromatic herbs (basil, parsley, rosemary, sage, etc.);
The garden calendar
How to take care of our vegetables with natural methods.
Practical information
Number of pupils who can be welcomed daily: about 50 (two classes) both in Casaldianni and in the Garden of Casa Betania.
In case of bad weather: possibility of welcoming schoolchildren in covered spaces.
How to use the meal: packed lunch.
